Tooth Crown in Chicago, IL
Dental crowns are a secure way to fill gaps and help restore your smile if you have missing or damaged teeth. A crown can also help you bite and chew better, which can positively impact other systems in your body, such as your digestive system.
Avila Dental offers a variety of handcrafted crown styles. We will help you determine what crown is best for you based on your requirements.
What is a Crown?
A crown is a cover or “cap” that is put on a tooth. The crown restores the tooth to its normal shape, size and function. The purpose of a crown is to make the tooth stronger or improve the way it looks.
You may need a crown if you:
- have a cavity that is too large for a filling
- have a missing tooth and need a bridge
- need to cover a dental implant
- have a tooth that is cracked, worn down or otherwise weakened
- have had root canal treatment—the crown will protect the restored tooth
- want to cover a discolored or badly shaped tooth and improve your smile!
Our Dental Crown Process
At Avila Dental, we strive to go above and beyond each patient’s expectations with a beautiful dental crown that will last a long time. We can break down our general procedure into these four steps:
1. Initial Preparation
Before anything else, we first assess the condition of the tooth. Our dentists will clean the tooth and – in some cases – file it down or apply fillings to prepare it for a crown.
Then we take an impression of the tooth and use it as a blueprint to develop the crown’s shape. We go through this phase with great care to ensure that the resulting crown is stable and comfortable.
2. Temporary Crown Placement
We protect the prepared tooth with a temporary crown during the client’s first appointment while we fabricate the permanent crown. For some cases, this may not be necessary.
3. Crown Fabrication
This phase takes a few days to accomplish. If the patient selects a porcelain material for the crown, we will choose a shade that closely matches the color of the patient’s teeth.
4. Permanent Tooth Crown Placement
During the patient’s second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and check the permanent crown’s fit and general appearance. Once the patient is satisfied, our dentists will secure it in place with adhesive. In need of dental bridges? Learn more about our dental bridges.
